The elegance of this room (despite its utilitarian purpose) and its lofty architecture remind us that meals had a liturgical function among Cistercian monks. The lectio divina from the reader’s pulpit was intended as edification for the monks, who ate in silence. Today, a varied musical repertoire is regularly heard in this room, the largest concert and reception room at Royaumont.
